“Restoration”

Good morning everyone,
As I had mentioned previously, Psalm 80 is all about restoration. We see this theme repeated in the refrain, “Restore us, O God of hosts; cause Your face to shine, and we shall be saved!” This is repeated in verses 3, 7, and 19. But another theme in this psalm runs parallel to God’s restoration of Israel. This theme is “less obvious” (I say that in quotes because while it is not mentioned directly by name, it envelopes this psalm in a very clear and obvious way). That other theme is God’s mercy. Take for example verse 8. It says, “You have brought a vine out of Egypt; You have cast out the nations, and planted it.” Obviously, this “vine” is Israel when God miraculously led them to freedom from Egypt. When Asaph talks about this vine being planted, he is referring to Israel’s conquest of the land of Canaan and the subsequent victories that followed. What is not usually seen is the actual miracle that that was. Israel is one nation. They were not the biggest nation in the world, and their population and their military was comparably small to the rest of the world. The land of Canaan had 7 nations that called Canaan home. Seven nations that were bigger, stronger, and/or at least more established in the land than Israel was. But, because of God’s mercy to Israel (all you Bible scholars know that Israel did not deserve His mercy after wandering in the wilderness for 40 years because of unbelief), Israel defeated the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites, and the Jebusites. This was God’s eternal mercy on display. His mercy is further seen in verse 14. It seems that Israel was experiencing some tribulation because Asaph cries out to God and “reminds” Him to “visit this vine and the vineyard which Your right hand has planted, and the branch that You made strong for Yourself. It is burned with fire, it is cut down; they perish at the rebuke of Your countenance.” (Vvs. 14-16) God’s mercy is also shown in His discipline of His children because our other option would be extinction. We are sinners and don’t deserve a second chance but God gives us multiple chances to come back to Him. Quick side note, God need only to glance and mankind will perish as is evidenced by verse 16. Charles Spurgeon said, “Men can do little with their arm, but God can do all things with a glance.” What a mighty God we serve! Lastly, His mercy is seen in godly leaders. Verses 17-18 says, “Let Your hand be upon the man of Your right hand, upon the son of man whom You made strong for Yourself. Then we will not turn back from You; revive us, and we will call upon Your name.” God’s mercy to a nation is revealed through its leaders that God appoints. Righteous leaders will lead righteously. And the whole nation benefits. But this verse is also looking ahead to the Messiah’s reign, when the world will experience what true peace, and righteousness, and justice looks like. Call upon Him and you shall be saved from the wrath of God due to your sin! Repent and experience life! Do not mistake God’s mercies for inaction. Blessings from Oregon.

Daily Devotion

Good morning everyone,

“But it is good for me to draw near to God; I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all Your works.” Psalm 73:28 Charles Spurgeon said, “He who is willing to declare the works of God shall never be silent for lack of wonders to declare.” This is a true statement. This verse is a fitting way to end the 73rd psalm. Asaph struggled throughout this psalm with the apparent prosperity of the wicked and he was feeling jealous. It didn’t make sense to him. But, once he entered into God’s presence, he had clarity. He, as he put it, “understood their end” (vs. 17). How often do we put off coming into God’s presence until we have no choice but to come into His presence? Would it not save us lots of confusion, heartache, unnecessary stress, and a host of other things if we just simply go to Him first? Asaph recognized this and ended his discourse with verse 28. It is good for us to draw near to God. James 4:8 reminds us that if we “draw near to God [then] He will draw near to [us].” In drawing near to God, we will be able to better see His goodness and blessings which we should tell to those around us. Our God is a good God; a good Father. There is no one like my God! He gives me blessings everyday, most of which I unfortunately miss. As Psalm 68:19 says, “Blessed be the Lord, who daily loads us with benefits.” He blessed me with a good Father’s Day with my family and some friends. He has given me two part time jobs and has provided for me and my family during this time of transition. It is amazing to see how He has brought me here to Oregon and how everything has played out. Even looking ahead at the opportunities and doors He is opening for my family proves His goodness. Not to mention His amazing love, grace, mercy, kindness, patience…..the list goes on and on. Declare His works O Christian! The world needs to hear what a good and great and mighty God is our God! Blessings from Oregon. ~ Alex Neuman

Down The Halls Of Heaven

No one can describe Heaven as is attested by Paul in 2 Corinthians 12:4. We can only imagine what Heaven will be like. We do know the sun will not be needed as God’s presence will be there which will give both light and warmth (Revelation 21:23). Heaven is a beautiful place and one in which God desires all people to dwell in. Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and His saving work and you shall be saved. Walk with Him in this life so that you may walk with Him down the halls of heaven.

Down The Halls of Heaven

Down the halls of Heaven I walk to and fro
Awestruck by His grace and beauty everywhere I go.
The sights I see, the sounds I hear; it’s beauty beyond depiction
The warmth and glow of His presence flows free without restriction.
As I walk amazed and enamored (I cannot even speak!)
I catch a glimpse of His beautiful face and my knees become so weak.
I fall down in awe and worship in front of my Creator
And then I feel His loving hands lift up this former sinner.
His gracious arms envelope me and I am filled with peace
For all the sin that I once knew is gone now; it has ceased.
In the halls of Heaven I now forever stay
Living in His presence and my crown, to Him, I lay.
Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God Almighty!
Who was and is and is to come! The Perfection of Beauty.

You Are My Strong Refuge

Good morning everyone,

Continuing on in Psalm 71, I will be looking at verses 7-9. Verse 7 says, “I have become as a wonder to many, but You are my strong refuge.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭71:7‬ ‭NKJV‬‬ We, as Christians, are confusing to the world. The Gospel does not make sense, after all how could it? If something sounds too good to be true it must be right? It makes no sense that a God who dwelled in Heaven would depart His glory to come down and die for humanity. Christians are different than everyone else and stick out like a sore thumb (at least they should). You must be out of your mind! Well it is true and anything else would be too good to be true, but not the Good News of Jesus Christ. Those who are not saved do not understand. But this is not some elite club that only some people can be a part of and that by invitation. There is an invitation but it is open to all. All one needs to do is believe that they are a sinner in need of a Savior and that Jesus came down to die in order to purchase their freedom. Verse 8 says, “Let my mouth be filled with Your praise and with Your glory all the day.” Psalms‬ ‭71:8‬ ‭NKJV‬‬ I like sugary foods and sugary drinks (oh and pizza!) but even my tongue will get tired of those flavors if I have them too much and too often. I have already grown tired of some flavors. But not so with the praises of God. I should never grow tired of singing His praises and the sweet flavor that it brings to my soul. The delight that it brings to His face is enough to keep me satisfied. I remember (a few years ago) feeling like God was smiling down on me and it felt amazing! Lastly, verse 9 gives hope for aged. The psalmist says, “Do not cast me off in the time of old age; do not forsake me when my strength fails.” ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭71:9‬ ‭NKJV‬‬ God doesn’t care how old or young you are. He is concerned with your heart. He can use a person in their old age just as effectively as one in their prime. The heart is what matters. Keep your heart looking up and dedicated to Christ the LORD! Blessings from Oregon! ~ Alex Neuman

“My Strong Refuge”

Good morning everyone,
I will try to keep this devotional short today as there is a lot. To begin with, I have started on Psalm 71. In verse 3, the psalmist describes the personal nature of God. Verse 3 says (emphasis has been added), “Be MY strong refuge, to which I may resort continually; You have given the commandment to save ME, for You are MY rock and MY fortress.” ‭What this verse shows us (besides the fact that God truly does save) is that God is a personal God. How many religions can say that the god they worship is personal? This personal relationship between God and man is seen throughout the Psalms. God is mine!! Next, in verse 4, the psalmist entreats God to save him from the hand of the wicked man, the hand of the unrighteous man, and the hand of the cruel man. This made me think of the verse in Ephesians where Paul said God is able “to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think” (‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭3:20‬ ‭NKJV‬‬). Mind you, God is more than able to defeat any evil force no matter how big or strong it is. But the psalmist mentioned three men and I was reminded of God’s three-fold promise that He is more than able. In verse 5, the psalmist admits that he hopes in God for “You are my trust from my youth.” How important it is for us to trust in God from our youth. However, you may be saying that you were a rebel in your youth and are unqualified to make such a statement. I beg to differ. Aging is a fact of life. Follow God now and when you are older, you may say (along with the psalmist) “You are my trust from my youth.” Lastly, verse 6 is a call to praise God. One of the reasons I appreciate the Psalms is because one can never praise God enough. There are numerous calls to worship and praise and praise is beautiful. Verse 6 says, “By You I have been upheld from birth; You are He who took me out of my mother’s womb. My praise shall be continually of You.” The psalmist recognized God’s sustaining power even before he was born! Life is truly a gift! Unfortunately, we as a society either don’t understand this or do not appreciate it. Charles Spurgeon said this, “God is the circle where praise should begin, continue, and endlessly revolve, since in Him we live, and move, and have our being.” Rest assured of your God believer. Blessings from Oregon.
